Today marks ten years since the of the passing of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a figure of immense strength and resilience whose story continues to inspire me. I had the honor of meeting Ruben in New York when he was awarded an honorary degree, a moment that underscored his profound impact on the fight for justice.
Rubin Carter’s life was a testament to the enduring struggle against injustice, famously captured in Bob Dylan’s lyrics: “Here comes the story of the Hurricane, the man the authorities came to blame for somethin’ that he never done.” His wrongful conviction and subsequent exoneration highlight a poignant narrative of resilience and hope.
Meeting Rubin left a deep impression on me. His commitment to advocating for the wrongfully accused was inspiring. Dylan’s words, “Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game,” resonate as a powerful reminder of the work still needed in our justice system.
On April 20 lets remember Rubin “Hurricane” Carter and draw inspiration from his courage. His legacy is not just in the battles he fought but in the spirit of change he ignited.
Rest in peace, Rubin.
